What are safety clothing and why should we wear them in the workplace? Safety clothing refers to protective equipment that we are required to wear especially when we are working in a hazardous place to protect our body from the ill effects of the chemicals and other materials that can harm us. Safety clothing may include helmets, googles or protective garments. These safety clothing are worn to keep us healthy and protected from any occupational related injury. There are controllable and uncontrollable events that happen in the workplace and these safety clothing are worn to reduce the risk for accidents. There are several forms of hazards in the workplace such as working in a mine where the risk of inhaling poisonous fumes are very high, workers are mandated to wear masks and breathing apparatus to help them breathe clean air especially in very deep parts of the mine where ventilation is not adequate. Another form of safety clothing is the protective garment that are suited for the type of exposure you are in such are those working in the laboratory where materials for use must be non-porous so that chemicals and other infectious agents will not be able to pass through the material. Laboratory personnel also uses gloves that are made of plastic or latex that prevents microorganisms such as bacterial and viruses to penetrate the material, same as body fluids and blood. Those working with hot objects such as glass and metal, they wear thick garments especially designed not to catch fire, melt or be easily penetrated by heat.  These workers also wear gloves made of thick leather and heat resistant materials so that heat and other debris may not be able to affect their body. One of the most common safety clothing that we see are helmets and boots.  Here's a good read about workwear trousers, check it out!
